Discovering Lent
“I’m giving up chocolate for Lent.”
I think that might be one of the most cliche things we think of (and have probably heard… or have even said ourselves) when it comes to the season of lent.
The sacrifice of delight in chocolate is this idea of giving up something you love for 40-days, and then on Easter Sunday, when chocolate is plentiful in the shapes of bunnies and eggs, we get to enjoy those first bites of this delicious treat we gave up. It tastes sweeter, we savour it a little more, and in the post-Easter days, we most likely return to our previous chocolate eating habits.
I like to think of this idea described above as the ‘starter version’ of lent.
Fearless.
“Bet on yourself.” Those words were the first star to appear in the dark sky of potential of my word of the year for 2025.
As per usual, it’s when I least expect it… When I’m not doing any sort of intentional reflection or dreaming the first spark of inspiration appears. Likening it to the first star in a night sky feels like a welcome analogy knowing what first emerges is just the first star to be revealed in what will inevitably form the constellation that reveals my word of the year.
On This New Years Day
On this New Year’s Day…
I turned the kettle on to boil,
Took out a favourite mug gifted from a friend,
And asked myself which tea I was feeling like enjoying.
‘Drink the good tea’ echoed in my mind as if someone was saying it aloud.
My word of the year for 2024 was abundance, rooted in enjoying the luxuries of every day life, lingering on the good things, and saying yes to opportunities as they came my way. Living life with a lens of abundance instead of scarcity.
Advent Traditions: Embodied Advent
Advent was one of the first seasons of the church calendar I found myself actively, intentionally engaging with. I remember when I ordered my very first Advent study guide from She Reads Truth and how excited I was to engage with the Christmas season in a new way. When the box arrived, I hadn’t just purchase a study book for myself, but I purchased a few to gift to friends who I thought would also love engaging in the season in this way.
Illuminating Advent
I remember my mom’s homemade yule log…
I can recall the greyish-white bark as the log sat on our dining room table, four taper candles sitting across the length of the top, tinsel garland swirled between them, and a plastic ‘Merry Christmas’ plaque that I’m sure was re-purposed from a cake that was indulged in years ago that has been saved and reused many, many times.
Each Sunday leading up to Christmas, one more candle would be lit until the final Sunday before Christmas day where all four would be lighting the yule log in all its glory, the candles burning bright in a staircase pattern as the freshest candle was lit for the first time and the first-lit candle was burning close to the bottom.
