Joy, redefined

Sometimes, you learn something new and it seemingly changes everything.

That’s how I felt when I was deepening my understanding of Joy last advent season.

We often look at joy as ‘joy vs happiness’. Perhaps we have all been told the classics that ‘happiness is surface level and joy is deeper’, or ‘true joy only found in Christ’. Perhaps we’ve been told that ‘happiness is skin deep while joy is felt in our soul’. Or maybe the two have been used interchangeably throughout your life. Advent was one of the first seasons of the church calendar I found myself actively, intentionally engaging with. I remember when I ordered my very first Advent study guide from She Reads Truth and how excited I was to engage with the Christmas season in a new way. When the box arrived, I hadn’t just purchase a study book for myself, but I purchased a few to gift to friends who I thought would also love engaging in the season in this way.

Illuminating Advent

I remember my mom’s homemade yule log…

I can recall the greyish-white bark as the log sat on our dining room table, four taper candles sitting across the length of the top, tinsel garland swirled between them, and a plastic ‘Merry Christmas’ plaque that I’m sure was re-purposed from a cake that was indulged in years ago that has been saved and reused many, many times.

Each Sunday leading up to Christmas, one more candle would be lit until the final Sunday before Christmas day where all four would be lighting the yule log in all its glory, the candles burning bright in a staircase pattern as the freshest candle was lit for the first time and the first-lit candle was burning close to the bottom.
