The World Needs Your Magic
Like clockwork, another year has come to an end and with the tick of a millisecond that flourishes like a magic wand of some mystical fairy godmother, a new year begins.
That wand seemingly transforms all our desires and longings, dreams and visions, into tangible moments we feel could actually happen. They are within our grasp, with 365 days to see them become reality. Eventually the magical feeling starts to fade… the seconds tick by, the days fall into ‘the past’, and we are left with the reality of the magic feeling like it’s come undone at the ‘midnight’ expiration.
But the world needs your magic.
On Discovering my word for 2024
Discovering my word of the year is a combination of things:
reflection on the year that past
a draw to different themes
intuition or inspiration of the Spirit
the 'under the rock' thought process
affirmation
commitment
This year, I found myself outside of a formal 'sit down and reflect on the year' moment with my favourite questions and set aside time. I couldn't sleep and was up around 4:30am with my journal, reading my psalm of the day, and then reflections on the year started to pour out. During this time, words started to emerge.
The invitation for 2022
I’ve enjoyed the practice of leaning into a word or theme of the year for the past 7 years. Instead of setting specific goals for the year, I would set more generalized themes for the different areas of my life and then allow that to simmer down into one overarching theme. As time went on, the process changed and I found myself intentionally reflecting on the past year and praying about what the next year would hold while envisioning the kind of person I wanted to be when the calendar would flip once more to another year.
My Theme for 2019
Instead of goals for the year I’ve chosen a theme. I’ve been doing this since at least 2014 and it has been such a beautiful way to set an intention for my year. I write the word out in gold calligraphy and frame it on my desk so I see it often— a constant reminder of the kind of person I aspire to be and where I want to focus during the year.
